My Review of "Dark Phoenix"

Spoilers Ahead!

Though it has its fair share of problems, Dark Phoenix sends the X-Men franchise out on a good note.

The story line took some time to get going, but after Jean killed Raven, the film manged to really get going. The film's ending, in my opinion, was perfect, watching Xavier and Erik play chess was the best way to end the series. I was really disappointed that Quicksilver was not in the film for very long.

I don't understand the hate for the film's visual effects. I thought they looked excellent, critics have no idea what they are talking about. Hans Zimmer's musical score was not very good however.

The film's action scenes were okay. The final battle between Jean and the Alien lady was really anti-climatic, which was very disappointing for me. However, the X-Men Vs Magneto's gang on the streets of New York was really well done, as well as the train battle. I was glad they actually got Charles involved in some of the action scenes.

The acting was solid. Some of the cast did not start out well, such as Tye Sheridan (Cyclops) and Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), but when Michael Fassbender (Magneto) showed up everyone's acting managed to get so much better. Michael Fassbender however, made everyone's acting very pale and dull by comparison. FOX, casting Michael Fassbender was the best decision you guys made ever.

The emotion in this film was really good. You really felt bad for Jean when you found out her father abandoned her. Nicholas Hoult about made me cry when Raven died, his acting was good also, but still pale in comparison to Fassbender's. Simon Kinberg did a great job directing as well.

Overall, while suffering from poor pacing, lack of Quicksilver, a poor musical score, and being anti-climatic, Dark Phoenix heavily delivered on the visual effects, powerful emotion, a strong ending, some well shot middle of the movie action scenes, a strong direction, and a powerful performance by Michael Fassbender to conclude the nearly 20 year franchise on a good note.

Out of 4 stars I would give it...

3 out of 4 stars
