The Crow (2024): Review

While it has it's moments, the film doesn't even come close to the original film.

The story line was horribly paced. Whenever it felt like the film was about to get moving, it would immediately slow down. That killed the movie so much. I also didn't like the fact that he didn't become the Crow until about 45 minutes in the movie, and then becomes the Crow again later in the movie. I understand wanting to show how much Eric and Shelly loved each other, but the original film managed to do that with the minimal flashback scenes that they had.

The acting was decent for the most part. Bill Skarsgard managed to make the most of what he had, but he lacked the charisma that Brandon Lee had. FKA Twigs was not the best casting choice. She didn't really do the best job until the ending, she showed a lot of good emotion there. Zoe Kravitz or Zendaya would have been much better choices. Danny Huston, like Michael Wincott in the original '94' movie, stole the show. While I hated the fact that Huston's character had supernatural powers, he was still a pretty creepy villain.

The action scenes were solid. I was really glad that they managed to make Eric avenging Shelly's death satisfying. The problem though with these action scenes is that they lacked the flair that the original had, and a lot of that had to do with the director. Rupert Sanders is just not a good director. Even the way the city was designed in the '94' version felt like something right out of a comic book.

I will give major props to one thing about this film. The emotion was really good, and a lot of that had to do with Skarsgard's performance. You felt for him in so many ways with how he lost Shelly, and the ending was emotional as well. You really felt for these 2, and it was just a shame certain things were not written better with this film.

This film just proved that you cannot remake a classic film. If they ever wanted to do a remake again, they better decide to make this movie a more comic accurate adaptation then, as that is the only way to do a proper remake. They can't do a remake any other way!

Out of 4 stars I would give it...

2 out of 4 stars
