Warning, Massive Spoilers Ahead!
Sonic boasts plenty of charm, and strong performances to make for a fun and exciting family movie.
The story line was great, and I loved the bond between Tom and Sonic. The introduction to Dr. Robotnik/Dr. Eggman was great, and I loved his motive and his love for machines. The ending where he fully becomes Dr. Eggman was a great way to set up a sequel, as was the surprising arrival of Miles Tails Prower.
The visual effects in the movie were top notch, I loved Sonic's design just as much as I loved the original design (Not sorry).
The acting by the cast was great. James Marsden showed that he can still act, and that he is more than capable of leading a movie. Ben Schwartz was a great Sonic, as he captured the attitude and charisma of the character. Jim Carrey though was easily the best actor in this movie. Jim showed that he has not lost his touch when it comes to comedy, and I am looking forward to a potiential sequel that will have Dr. Eggman going full insane and evil.
In terms of what I would like to see in a sequel, I would love to see Knuckles, Mighty, Charming, and Espio show up. I hope also that they would build up the arrival of the Chaos Emeralds, as that would be great as to raise the stakes up the sequel.
But I would love for the sequel to this movie to end with Dr. Eggman mentioning that he plans on creating the ultiamte life form, thus hinting at the arrival of Shadow the Hedgehog. Shadow is my favorite character and I would love to see either Christian Bale or Jackie Earle Haley voice the character.
Overall, Sonic the Hedgehog kicks off the new decade with a film that honors its characters source material, and features some great visual effects, laugh out loud humor, strong characterization, setting a potientally exciting sequel, a great story line, and a strong performance from Jim Carrey to deliver a fun film that the whole family can enjoy.
Out of 4 stars I would give it...
